How Tan AI Uses AI
In short: Tan AI uses Google's Gemini AI to power its features. Your data is processed securely, never sold, and never used to train AI models.
1. What AI Powers Tan AI?
Tan AI uses Google Gemini, a third-party AI service provided by Google LLC, to deliver its core features. All AI-powered features in the app — including the chat assistant, skin analysis, and routine creation — are processed through Google's Gemini API.
2. What Data Is Sent to Google's AI?
When you use Tan AI, the following data may be sent to Google Gemini for processing:
| Feature | Data Sent |
|---|---|
| AI Chat Assistant | Your messages, tanning preferences (skin type, goals, sensitivity), current UV index, and location-based weather data |
| Skin Photo Analysis | The photo you take or upload (used to determine your skin type and undertone) |
| Routine Creation | Your onboarding answers, skin analysis results, and tanning preferences |
| Product Recommendations | Your skin type, budget, and tanning goals |
3. What Google Does (and Doesn't Do) With Your Data
We use Google Gemini through its paid API, which provides the following protections:
- No model training: Your data is not used to train or improve Google's AI models.
- No data retention by Google: Google does not retain API inputs or outputs beyond the immediate processing window.
- No human review: Your conversations and photos are not reviewed by Google employees.
- Encrypted in transit: All data is transmitted securely using HTTPS/TLS encryption.
For full details, see Google Gemini API Terms of Service and Google AI Privacy Policy.
4. Your Consent
Before any data is sent to Google's AI, we ask for your explicit consent during the onboarding process. You must agree to AI data processing to use the app, as all core features (chat, skin analysis, routine creation) depend on AI processing.
If you no longer wish your data to be processed by AI, you can stop using the app and request deletion of any server-side data by emailing help@usetanai.com.
5. Face Data and Photo Handling
When you use the skin analysis feature, a photo of your face is sent to Google Gemini to determine your skin type and undertone. Here is exactly what happens:
- The photo is captured on your device and sent as a base64-encoded image to our server.
- Our server holds the image only in volatile memory (RAM) and forwards it directly to the Google Gemini API. The photo is never written to disk, saved to a database, or stored in cloud storage.
- Google Gemini analyzes the photo and returns text-based skin characteristics (Fitzpatrick type, undertone, sensitivity indicators).
- Once the response is received, the photo is immediately and permanently discarded from our server memory.
- Only the text-based results are returned to your device and stored locally.
We do not use facial recognition, face mesh, or any biometric identification technology. The analysis extracts only skin-level visual characteristics — it does not identify, authenticate, or track individuals.
6. Data We Do NOT Send to AI
- Your name or any personally identifiable information
- Your exact GPS coordinates (we send city-level location for weather/UV only)
- Your payment or subscription information
- Your device identifiers or advertising IDs
- Your push notification tokens
7. Where Data Is Processed
Your data travels through the following path:
- Your device → sends request to our backend server
- Our server (Hetzner, Germany, EU) → constructs the AI prompt with relevant context
- Google Gemini API (Google Cloud) → processes the request and returns a response
- Our server → formats the response and sends it back to your device
Our backend server acts as a secure intermediary. Your device never communicates directly with Google's AI.
8. Other Third-Party Services
Besides Google Gemini, Tan AI also uses other services for analytics, subscriptions, and notifications. For a complete list, see our Privacy Policy.
